----------------------------------------------------------------- PLEASE NOTE
Entries go to indie@umsu.manchester.ac.uk or dj@indie.man.ac.uk, not indie@manchester.ac.uk as previously stated.
Thanks, Tev -----------------------------------------------------------------
everybody wants to be the dj... so we're giving you lucky indie soccers the chance to dj at indie vs raw on wednesday 29th march...
we want you to email your proposed set, approx 30 mins worth, to indie@umsu.manchester.ac.uk by the afternoon of monday 20th march. the committee will then pick our favourite set. we're looking for originality, dance-ability and above all it should be indie related...we don't want to lose everyone to the rock room do we???
we don't want them posted here cos that takes away the fun competition element...but any questions or comments...post away!

okay...what time would the winner get to play their set? 'cause super epic anthems won't really work at the start of a night for example...

First of all, sorry, it seems i'm always complaining, but...
A dj competition, from my point of view, should be people djing and then people vote for the best. The way you propose is... bad, in the sense that for example, my set would include some spanish songs (1 or 2, don't worry!!) but i'm sure you haven't listened to them before, so you're not gonna like it, if you understand what i mean.
Other way to still using your way, but better, should be that instead of sending an email with the songs, we gave you a cd with the set.

yeah, sending a cd is a much better idea. you might not know a few things on my set, and its better for you to actually listen, rather than just saying: "hmm, so and so followed by so and so. that doesnt sound like it will work"

we're willing to accept entries like that. Drop them round to Indie Soc HQ and we'll give them a listen. However; we still want a list of what's being played attached, so you must write the set down as well.

yeah bea's idea of a proper dj competition is a good way of doing it, and maybe in the future we could organise a whole night dedicated to a dj competition that way. as it stands at the moment, it's a bit risky for us to get lots of people who have never dj-ed before. we're really just trying this out.
we didn't say submit cds cos not everyone can burn em off, but yep by all means make them and get them to us if you want. between us we can probably get the jist of your set anyway. anything we don't know we could always download.
in terms of time, good point, i didn't write it cos i couldn't remember what we decided. i think the feeling was it'd either be the first half hour, or perhaps an hour or so into the night. (can someone on the committee confirm this please?) so basically, you should be aiming to get the night off to a good start, get people up and dancing etc.

we'll be doing it off ben's laptop the way we usually do, so we'd ask you to upload any songs ben doesn't own in advance of the night. it's not difficult to do. if i can do it, any monkey can. everyone should enter! you never know what we'll deem cool...

yeah, if you have a song on the setlist and you win, i'll let you know and you'll have to send it to me, or bring the CDs round and i'll get them onto my PC (and if you do it that way, i'll probably show you the ropes of the DJ equipment at the same time). But yes, we have all the equipment; all we need is the speakers, heh.

well done! i wonder if i should enter. maybe that'd be biased given as how i'm on the panel of judges..

you are biased, and there isnt really any point, seeing as you are already djing. seriously though, my last track could be the new last track of the night! its that damn good! why has nobody thought about it before?

to be honest, i may not be DJing at the next club night. The indie society apparently think Democracy is a good idea and they think all the committee should be given a chance. Hmph.

yeah ben, you have dj-ed at both events we've had so far, as have alex and tev. time for someone else to have a bit more time if they want it. although we need to sort this out. we do and try to be democratic. that's why i suggested this dj competition to give members a chance too.

the internet really doesnt give across any sense of irony does it? I dont care if other people DJ. If I did I would have argued more. I think the point is that the committee that want to play indie music have played indie music though. Except perhaps Rob, who is quite welcome to. I just don't think the other committee members would actually want to have to play an hour of indie music. Of course, if i'm wrong then that's fine too.
edit: what do you mean 'give someone else have more time'? Let's not forget that at the end of the clubnight Tev called it a day and I had to play the last 25 minutes of his set. I'd gladly DJ all night if nobody wanted to, (Hell, I DJed for 7 hours at a house party on Friday) but the point is I enjoy DJing more than most things I've done. I find it incredibly satisfying not just playing music i like, but watching people's reactions (especially Natalie's hahaha) when songs they like come on. Seriously, I would do this for a living and get paid pittance if I could rather than anything else. (If my mum reads this, no i'm not jacking in the degree...)

yeah i know, but other people love doing it too. i was talking to michael earlier and said that if i ever came into a substantial amount of money i'd open my own club etc etc blah blah... i think loz really wants a go (and she'd be okay) and i'd have another go for sure. i'd like to spend some time going through your music too. you know i love it too, giving you a break at the house party, playing requests...

giving me a break? hardly! you waited til i went to the toilet then didnt let me sit down again for ages and i got sick of your hovering yeah, i'd never open my own club, not after talking to Simon from 42s. However successful you think 42s is, he goes on about how much work it is. He sleeps less than most students :\ 8-4 most days. 8am-4am. Every single day. And 42s is a big club with a reasonable turnover. bah, im such a cynic

which is precisely why i'd like to own one, design the style and feel of the place, and then let some business whizz do the actual running of it for me. this is when i become a millionnaire you understand, and then i'll be able to afford that.
the fact that i fought to prise the laptop away from you only furthers my point.
