hey,
my name is katie. I did actually (on the recommendation of my friend Elliott woods) come to the showing of 24hr party people (which i have seen numerous times before and remains fabulous) and retro bar after with my friend Tim a while ago, so there is a very slim chance you might remember me.
Anyway Ive been hideously busy since then and havent managed to make it to any of the other events *slaps wrist*, but hope to make it some soon. Anyway Im writing an essay due in tomorrow at 4.30pm and dont plan to sleep so I thought writing this would be a good way to distract myself.
So what to say? Its so hard trying to think of the right things to get across what Im like. I do philosophy and am in my second year. I spent a year doing physics before coming to my senses so this is the third year Ive been in manchester.
I suppose I should probably list some bands I like, but its so difficult to choose the ones that are 'typical' katie bands. So in no particular order; bright eyes, eilliot smith, radiohead, feeder, pulp, sex pistols, mew, seafood, jetplane landing, thea gilmore, bob dylan, death cab for cutie, jeff buckley, the cure, eels, the kinks, josh rouse, modest mouse, mull historical society, british sea power, joy division, serafin. There are so many more and Ive probably forgotten some very important ones but I think thats a long enough list. Fav films include; true romance, spirited away, 28 grammes, magnolia, pulp fiction, boys dont cry, mysterious skin, the emperors new groove, thirteen, the usual suspects. T.V.; buffy is the best show EVER. simpsons, black books, peep show, neighbors. Fav books: Norwegian wood, 1984 and any Orwell, on the road, pastures of heaven and most Steinbeck, northern lights trilogy, atonement and most Ian Mcewan, twelve, brave new world, oryx and crake, catch 22. What else? I go caving nearly every other weekend, which is more fun than it sounds. Im vegetarian. I believe software should be free and open (congrats to whoever wrote the website btw, its very shiny). I actually get rather excited about my degree (yeah i know im a geek), but rarely spend enough time on it. My favorite colour is red. For my 21st birthday im getting drumming lessons which I have wanted since i was 14, and im very excited. People who dont vote make me angry. I used to spend a lot of time on the net, msn/lj/irc/slashdot etc etc but havent got the time these days. I come from preston - the one of the most boring places in the world - and spend as little time there as possible.
Right Ive rambled enough. Im aware that the above is probably way too long, congratulations if you are still reading, you must be very bored! It also sounds nothing like me, its always so hard to get these first post things right.
bye!

Welcome to the forums! If you're like most other people here, you'll probably spend far too much time on the forums and end up totally addicted!
Anyhow I think I got introduced to you by Rob at retro bar? The other people you havent met are a friendly bunch, and we welcome new people to the society, so dont be afraid to just come along to any of the other events we have. The next two are the chinese buffet this monday night, well tonight, and then our regular meet up at 8pm in Korumba for general social drinks, the music quiz and possibly jaunts out to a club after (as I'm sure you can probably see from our events page though)!

Katie! Hello! How are you doing? It is nice to finally hear from you, Barbed Wire Kisses feels like an aeon ago! Will you and Tim be joining us for the Chinese Buffet tomorrow evening? I hope so. Also, if you enjoyed Barbed Wire Kisses, it is on again this Wednesday, and I am sure there will be a group of us there.
Anyway, don't be a stranger...

Holy shit, i thought i was the only person in Manchester to like Serafin (apart from Craig). Your music taste is, in fact, sublime. I'm rather glad you joined up because we were worried that you had a bad time or something and didn't want anything to do with us! But i'm happy you've signed up to the forum I'm so happy to see other people inviting people out to events and stuff. It makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. Arron, you are in fact the nicest guy on the planet, it seems. But yes, Katie, you MUST come along to some events, because we had a rather ace chat when you were at Retro Bar.

hey, firstly - thankyou for the invites. I may well wander down on wednesday, and drag tim along too. Afraid I've had to make the decision to skip tonights buffet due to finance (I really cant justify spending money on eating out) but i promise promise promise to come to something soon. And I didnt have an awful time, I just havent had any time recently, theres just too much stuff to do out there!
Ben - thankyou for saying my music taste is sublime, Im very flattered. I have of course realised that Ive missed out some incredibly important bands from my list; biffy clyro (first album anyway), belle and sebastain, reindeer section, hell is for heros, kenisis, muse to name but a few. I have liked serafin for aaaaaaaaaages, first saw them supporting feeder in 2002 (or was it 2001? hhm) and have been hooked ever since. About our chat, I seem to remember it was about lovely geeky things that make get very excited and wave my hands in a crazy fashion. I hope I didnt put you off and that "rather ace" is not ironic... </paranoia>

haha! i saw them on that tour as well, It was Serafin Hell is for Heroes and Feeder wasn't it? I saw them at Brixton Academy. One of the best gigs I've ever been to, which is saying a lot given how i was front row at wembley for muse. Basically, you keep naming bands i love (Kinesis = YES PLEASE!, Biffy and B&S too), which makes you very very welcome to come along haha, not at all. we talked about maths and philosophy and physics and elliot and preston (heh). It was great fun. I can't wait to spaz about bands more with you! See you soon. Perhaps next monday for the free music quiz at korumba?

have just rechecked the list and realized that ive missed idelwild and lamb and delamitri (dont hate me) off, which are all huge huge omissions. And plus i havent put any of the new trendy stuff like broken social scene, clor, arctic monkeys, magic numbers, help she cant swim etc etc. But to be fair, everyone likes them, and I wouldnt class bands like those as loves yet.
i dont remember hell is for heros playing aswell, just serafin and feeder. my memory could be wrong... Was a good gig, but Im not sure it'd be one of the best. Thats only cause my best gigs all have stories attached to them and prove really hard beat (although mew recently scraped into top ten).
Im glad I didnt scare you. I think I remember mentioning programming and I am aware that 'normal' people (please please dont say but what is normal, you know what i mean) find it boring. And odd that a blonde girl should be interested.
next monday, ill be there providing money and work situation is good.
hope you have fun tonight though

ooh two people posted while i was writing that reply! eels are indeed fab, I dont understand why more people dont inculde them in lists of 'classic' bands. did you see them on their last tour? they were so good, did encores untill they got thrown out of academy 2 and i missed my train home to shitty preston and had to wait till 6 in the morning! thankyou for the welcome elaine. i second the yay and the woo. or did you second my yay and woo, as i was the one to mention the bands...hhm. anyway, hello to you both!

Yes, I went to the Ritz. and it honestly was the best gig I've ever been to. When I wasn't almost crying during Fox In The Snow/Get Me Away From Here, I'm Dying ( ) I had the biggest grin on my face. (Julia will be able to confirm this) It was ace. Stuart went into the crowd to dance/sing during Electronic Renaissance. It was so good I bought tickets for their London gig on ebay and went home for the weekend to 'visit the rents' *cough* ...erm...I mean...the gig was allright I suppose, you didn't miss much...

I guess now would be an opportune time to introduce myself too. I'm Tim, the one reffered to at the top of this thread and doubtless have met some of you at BWK tho my inadequacy at remembering names means I'm incapable of matching ppls names on here to faces. oops My music, is, in general a little more main stream than I'd like and my favourite bands include the clash, oasis (the early stuff), muse, radiohead, the verve, the futureheads, the stone roses, idlewild, embrace (early stuff), blur (ditto) and the undertones. And to prove I do look a bit further afield; the electric soft parade, the (international) noise conspiracy and errm the moldy peaches. The best bands I've seen live are the vines and the datsuns. My favourite books are treasure island and 2001 and my favourite films include the usual suspects, platoon, monty python and the holy grail, day of the jackal, shawshank redemption, the shining and full metal jacket (tho not 2001!). I come from Tyneside (up north) and also go caving.

I was born and lived the first 19 years of my life in sunny Gateshead tho I now spend my non-uni days in the quaint (euphemism for boring) town of Morpeth.
PS. Don't believe anyone whos says I'm from Macclesfield.
