I feel so unread - I've only read Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre off that list. I quite enjoyed it. My uncle was telling me all about the author and the terrible things he has done. Do you think it the allegations are true?
I really like 'Waterhip Down' by Richard Adams and 'Burmese Days' by George Orwell. Burmese Days is fantastic. It is one of the few books I've read were I could feel everything in it. I like swashbuckling adventure stories too, like King Soloman's Mines and Robinson Crusoe and stuff.

hehe makes me feel pretty well read...but then i do english lit so only to be expected. howl is such a great poem... " I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix, angelheaded hipsters burning for the ancient heavenly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of night..." if that's not the most dynamic opening to a poem ever, i dunno what is. saying that, my favourite ginsberg poem is "a supermarket in california". i love the beats so much. i can't wait for them to finally crop up in my america in the 40s and 50s module...which is the best module ever. i don't like coleridge, but only cos he reminds me of the poetry module i just did (quite badly in). bloody ye old poems that go on with themselves for pages and pages which you can't get away with reading five minutes before the exam i know, i know they're great literature. but not easy to blag your way through. must say i've not heard of budisha's seahorses...at least i don't think so ...one to look up i think if it's as good as the rest of your list.

Julia! talk about the topic of the thread for once!
That said, I don't think I've actually read ANY of those books/anthologies... *philistine* Apart from Romeo And Juliet, Othello, and America. I think I've read that... Was a while ago.

bah, anyone that says they've read and understood all of paradise lost is a FILTHY LIAR. my favourite poet is AE Housman, but i also like Dylan Thomas, and i did a lot of Keats for A level. I've read Howl and On the Road because my best friend has significantly beatish tendencies. And oh, I wouldn't ever specify which works by Shakespeare i consider the best...it's a cliche, but it's true - everything he ever wrote, ever, is out of this world. on topic enough, frankie??
